Requesting a new or changing an existing permit zone

How a permit zone is created or changed

  Step 1: Submit your request

  To request a new permit zone or changes to an existing zone, we will need to know:

  • The street name that you are requesting the zone for
  • Your name, address, and daytime phone number

  Your request will be placed in a queue and processed in the order requests are made. The current wait time is approximately 16 to 18 months.

  Step 2: Complete a preliminary permit parking survey

  We will deliver letters to residents of the block with a link to an online survey. You may indicate on the survey:

  • Whether or not you are in favour of installing or changing the permit parking zone 
  • Details on the parking challenges members of their household and visitors face

  Action we will take

  If more than 50% of households are in favour of installing or changing the permit parking zone, we will design parking restrictions based on needs residents identified in the survey and proceed to step 3.

  If fewer than 50% of households are in favour of a permit parking zone, we will take no further action, and the request process will end.

  Step 3: Complete a final permit parking survey

  We will mail residents of the block a final survey with parking restriction design details. Residents may indicate whether or not they are in favour of creating or changing a permit parking zone.

  Compiling the results will take approximately two weeks.

  Action we will take

  If more than 50% of households are in favour of installing a permit parking zone, we will approve the request and proceed to step four.

  If fewer than 50% of households are in favour of the proposed permit parking zone, we will take no further action and the request process will end.

  Step 4: Permit parking signs are installed by the City

  When we have approved the request, signs will be installed. "No Parking Except With Permit" signs are the universal sign for permit parking.

  When the signs are installed, residents may buy an annual parking permit.
