Priority intersections and corridors

We have identified priority intersections and corridors to conduct detailed safety studies. Selection was based on:

  • Targetting high fatality and serious injury hotspots
  • The high presence of vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists)
  • The protection of at-risk groups (seniors, children, and people with mobility challenges)

The  safety studies will review safety issues and help us to develop effective strategies to reduce serious injuries and fatalities at each location and identify opportunities to improve safety through engineering, enforcement, and education measures for all transportation modes, including:

  • When collisions took place
  • Who was involved in the collisions
  • Where the collisions occur
  • How the collision occurred

Improving our walk + bike + roll to school program

Our  School Active Travel Planning Program  encourages and promotes walking and cycling to school. We are improving the program to address some of the challenges encountered during its pilot. Improvements include:

  • Focus on a selection of priority schools using safety data and in consultation with the Vancouver School Board
  • Manage all deliverables – engagement, data collection, reporting pieces, design, and implementation of new infrastructure – in house.
  • Accelerate quick to implement safety upgrades (for example, signage, paint markings, etc.) at more schools
