Smithe Street

Smithe Street Upgrades

We’re upgrading critical water, sewer, and street infrastructure on Smithe St from Homer St to Beatty St.

The existing sewer lines are at capacity and upgrades are required to help serve this growing neighbourhood. We will replace the sewer with a larger-capacity system which will have a life expectancy of 100 years.

The work will also rehabilitate the street and make safety improvements to the existing Downtown cycling network.

How this project may affect you

Access to residences and businesses

Access to residences, businesses, and most sidewalks will be maintained throughout construction. Detours around active construction areas may be in effect for people walking.

The Smithe Street bike lane will be closed at each block where construction is taking place. People cycling are asked to dismount in these areas and use the sidewalk.

Parking restrictions will be in effect to accommodate construction. Be sure to watch for No Parking signs as restrictions will change as work progresses. Restrictions will be lifted as soon as they’re no longer needed.

At least two lanes of traffic will be retained at all times on Smithe Street. Some traffic delays are expected.

All road users are encouraged to plan ahead by checking road closures online or connecting on the go through VanConnect.

Water supply

We will provide advanced notice of any disruption to your water supply, except if there is an emergency. During construction, you may notice occasional cloudy water. This cloudiness is not a health concern and will usually go away within a few hours.
