2022 Park Board commissioner candidates

Vancouver is one of two places in BC with an elected Park Board. The Vancouver Park Board is made up of seven commissioners.

The Park Board is responsible for managing City parks and community centres, and provides a wide-range of recreation services.

Candidate names are listed in numeric order based on the results of the random ballot draw.

The views expressed in these profiles are the views of the candidates and they are not endorsed by the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Park Board or the Vancouver School Board.

Biography

In my first term on the Parks Board I have held leadership positions, including Chair of Committee and, currently, Vice-Chair of the Board. Prior to election to the Park Board in 2018, I served as Chair of the Vancouver Parent Advisory Committee and as President of the Britannia Community Centre board.

While our parks were a lifeline for our communities during lockdowns, the closure of indoor facilities resulted in significant negative impacts. The subsequent proof-of-vaccination requirements for these facilities created unnecessary divisions and suffering in our community; such policies should never again be implemented.

Expanding community gardens would strengthen ties in communities while helping to feed them; including more fruit/nut trees in our 'urban forest' would allow for additional community building events (harvest walks,canning parties).

Biography

I work as a teaching assistant for the VSB and serve as a Director for BC Educators for Human Rights. Having been an IPM Technician for the Park Board and a high-rise-window-cleaner, I have a special appreciation for this 'branch' of our city (pun intended) and want it to realize its potential for keeping Vancouver green and its communities healthy.

The climate emergency is the issue of our times. I believe the Park Board can take bold action in the fight. We need to 1) reduce our carbon footprint by climate-proofing facilities and improving park and field design; 2) keep our parks at the heart of our urban biodiversity strategy by enhancing pollinator corridors and tree canopy; and 3) encourage shoreline improvements to accommodate sea-level rise. Reconciliation with First Nations underlies all our work.

Carla has over a decade of experience in architecture; working on affordable housing, urban design, and environmental responsibility. As president of the Strathcona Community Garden, Carla coordinates hundreds of volunteers, leading stewardship of Vancouver's largest community garden. There she spearheads a wetland project which manages stormwater while improving biodiversity. A mother of 3, she chairs her PAC's school grounds committee.

When elected, will make sure work to improve parks, beaches and recreation centres for families, children and organized sport. Our golf courses and aquatic centre need upgrading. These projects need to move ahead quickly so the citizens can benefit. Will also work hard to fix and ADD outdoor pools, outdoor hockey and new activities in Stanley park including pedal boats, petting zoo with rescue animals and kids camp out events.

Having lived in Vancouver, BC for my entire life, I really care about the City. The parks, beaches and recreation centres have amazing potential to be unlocked so people can enjoy and utilize them more fully. It's also crucial to PROTECT the gems of Vancouver Park Board so they are never closed or redeveloped for more condos.
