Need Help Setting Up a Website for your Community Organization?

The following information has been collected to assist individuals and non-profit organizations in the Vancouver area in accessing available internet training and services. For groups and organizations that qualify, services may include web access training, web development training, email address, internet connection and space to host your homepage.

Vancouver CommunityNet (Vancouver Community Network - VCN)

Provides weekly training sessions for groups and individuals. Sessions include First Time User Introductions, Community Groups and the Internet, Introduction to Email, Using the Internet with Windows and Netscape, and Search Tools. First Time User Introductions and Community Groups and the Internet are operated on a drop-in basis. The other sessions require pre-registration (contact Vancouver CommunityNet for registration information). All sessions are free of charge, but donations are welcome. They also offer free server space for community groups and individuals to post web pages on the internet (for non-commercial purposes).

Vancouver Public Library

Offers free, hands-on courses to the public of all ages. Most are offered at the Downtown Central Branch at Library Square, but check with your nearest branch for local offerings. Course registration is by phone Monday to Saturday. Computer and Internet Basics also available in other languages. Computer Basics - Get comfortable with using a computer during this 90-minute, hands-on course. Learn to use the mouse and the computer keyboard, and get an overview of basic computer functions.

Internet Basics - Learn about what's available on the Internet and how to find it. We'll talk about browsers, navigation, and effective searching during this 2-hour, hands-on course. Computer Basics or equivalent experience required.

E-mail Basics - Set up your own web-based e-mail account and explore the basics of sending and receiving e-mail in this 90-minute hands-on program. Computer Basics & Internet Basics or equivalent experience required.

Computer Comfort (through the Neil Squire Society)

Provides computer/internet training in an informal and non-threatening environment to people who have physical disabilities which affect mobility. Computers are available in the classroom for participants in the program. Instruction is one-on-one and all tutors are volunteers.

National Academy of Older Canadians (NAOC)

Provides computer and internet training to Canadians age 35 and over. Classes are small sized and taught at your own pace, and includes individual help. NAOC specializes in working with seniors and offers ‘senior friendly’ courses.
