Active Outreach - Red Fox Waking
The
Vancouver Park Board and the Red Fox pilot
hosting agency Helping Spirit Lodge Society
are working together under the Vancouver
Active Communities Network (VACNet) initiative
to support Aboriginal families to become
"20% More Active By 2010".
"The Active Communities Initiative is
all about becoming more active in our day-to-day
lives," said Active Communities Co-Chair
Bob Lenarduzzi. "Many people and organizations
are participating in the Vancouver Active
Communities Network to help people become
more fit and active. Active Outreach is
really helping that along."
Bob
Lenarduzzi and Co-Chair Sharon Urton were
joined by Park Board Commissioner Korina
Houghton, Councillors Suzanne Anton and Kim
Capri, Emma Sutherland and Silva Tenenbein
from Active Outreach, and Hazel Cardinal
and Rhonda Alvarez Licona of Helping Spirit
Lodge Society. The launch, which was opened
by Grandma Harris's Dancers, was held at the
Aboriginal Friendship Centre (1607 East Hastings
Street) on Tuesday, February 20.
Active
Outreach - Red Fox Waking, is part of the VACNet outreach program that
enables, encourages and supports Vancouverites to enjoy healthy active
lifestyles. Aboriginal children participating in the Red Fox Waking
program receive a "Red Fox Trail Tracker" booklet of fun fitness
activities that helps them explore many of the recreation opportunities
available in Vancouver.
The City and Vancouver Park Board have embraced the Provincial
Government's ACT NOW BC program targeted at getting BC residents
20% more active by 2010 making Vancouver and the Province the most
physically active venue ever to host the Olympics and Paralympics.
