Red Fox Fun at Sun Peaks Resort

Red Fox youth have 'peak' experiences at Sun Peaks Resort.

Thanks to Kids Up Front, Red Fox youth leaders participated in the annual "Sun Peaks Shares" event. This event sponsored by numerous businesses at Sun Peaks, provides a total ski and snowboard vacation to youth and families who face barriers to participating in winter sports.

For most of the Red Fox youth, this was their first vacation and their first time participating in winter sports. They learned how to snowboard and ski and Senator Nancy Greene Raine gave a personal snowboarding lesson to two of the young boys. The youth also enjoyed tubing, exploring nature, and eating many delicious meals.

On Saturday evening, there was a three course gala dinner. The highlight of the evening occurred when Senator Greene Raine spoke to the participants of Sun Peaks Shares. She gave an inspirational speech and invited the youth to come to Sun Peaks to get training and become part of the Sun Peaks staff team. The Red Fox participants were impressed by this offer and Chris, 17, is planning to become an employee at Sun Peaks Resort.

The Sun Peaks Shares program gave Red Fox youth new experiences and new ambitions about their leisure and career goals. Through these experiences, the youth learned if they set goals and work hard they could enjoy more wonderful vacations. As a result, everyone from the Red Fox program grew closer together as a team.

Established in 2006, the Red Fox program trains Aboriginal and inner city youth to lead free recreation activities for children and families in Vancouver's inner city. The Red Fox program is part of Active Communities Vancouver. Consultant Emma Sutherland coordinates the program, in partnership with the Vancouver Park Board, Vancouver Native Health Society and the Vancouver School Board.
