The new Sunset Community Centre opened its doors to the public on Monday, December 17, 2007. The 30,000 sq ft stylish structure was designed by Bing Thom Architects and was built by Haebler Construction Ltd. at a cost of just over $12 million.

Funding for the project came from the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Sunset Community Association.

The striking new facility, 20% larger than the old centre, boasts a uniquely curved roofline resembling a five-petaled flower when viewed from the air. Major programmable space includes a full-sized gymnasium featuring a hardwood floor and ceiling, two multipurpose rooms, a fitness centre, aerobics/dance room, arts and crafts room, youth room and two preschools. As well a new passive park space to the south of the building has been created.

History – The Original Sunset Community Centre

Sunset Community CentreOpened in 1950 and located in East Vancouver at 404 East 51st Avenue, the Sunset Community Centre was the city's second oldest recreation facility. Sunset Centre's affiliated facilities, Sunset Ice Rink and the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre, are located nearby.

This original centre had a most interesting history. The post World War II years brought with them a desire for a wider variety of public recreation facilities. This renewed interest in sport, recreation and cultural activities coincided with a Federal program that would grant monies for buildings that memorialized military sacrifices. Vancouver's first indoor recreation centres were a direct result of community fundraising in what was to become a pattern of partnership between the Vancouver Park Board and locally inspired associations.

In 1945 the new Sunset Association kicked-off its fundraising drive for Sunset Memorial Community Centre and was aided by Hollywood publicity agents who secured the support of the famous actor Bing Crosby. Bing Crosby attended the sod turning ceremony on September 22, 1948 and raised $22,000 for the fund when he broadcast his network radio show live from the Orpheum Theatre. Such was the crooner's dedication to the cause that he helped officially open the new centre on September 28, 1950 via a telephone hook-up from Los Angeles.

Sunset Community Centre is jointly operated
by the Sunset Community Association and the Vancouver Park Board.
