Spring has (finally!) sprung!
March
9, 2009 - Enjoy a stroll through Stanley Park during these final few days of winter and catch a glimpse of springtime. While this winter's cooler temperatures and abundant snow have slowed spring's arrival by a few weeks, don't despair: snowdrops are in full bloom and crocuses are hesitantly poking up through the cold ground.
A northwest facing slope along Lagoon Drive at Barclay Street in the West End is currently like a white, snowy blanket of snowdrops. These flowers were first planted in the late 1960s by a Park Board gardener who had accepted a donation of bulbs from an avid gardener and have now spread to almost half a block of blooms.
Not far behind the snowdrops and crocuses will be the cherry blossoms, which are already starting to show in a few sheltered locations.
