Project Description

This project is a revitalization of the existing urban plaza space, adjacent to the Roundhouse Art and Community Centre.

The will transform the existing plaza into an outdoor performance space that can hold 500-750 people, for everything from plays, concerts, farmers market, jazz festival. It will allow existing Community Centre programming to be improved, by "spilling" out to the plaza.

Project Update - February 2012

The majority of the work has been completed except for the final wiring and hydraulic work for the crane which will be finished onsite now that the crane is there and the delivery of some site furniture which is under construction.

The scope of work included:

  • Rotating the turntable to take it of axis with the street grid so people spend more time in the plaza instead of short cutting through.
  • Installing new decks on both sides of the turntable
  • A mist feature with programmable LED lighting under the deck on the west side. The mist shoots up through grate in the deck and the lights shine into the mist while changing colours locations etc. The mist feature and lights are fully programmable and we are installing some pressure plates in the deck and turntable to allow people to activate it themselves.
  • Lights in the pit that illuminate the turntable which will have the Safety First sign repainted on it.
  • Interpretive panels in the railing on the east side explaining a bit about the history of the area
  • Ramps down to the decks so they are accessible.
  • Custom made site furniture
  • The large crane sculpture which has fabric panels that can be installed on it to cover the west deck for special events the Roundhouse will need to figure out when and for how long they put up the canopy. It is not intended to be up all year since it was not designed to support snow.

Design of the plaza and concept for crane sculpture was done by Nick Milkovich Architects, the contractor is Smith Bros. & Wilson the crane was built by Dynamic Structures in PoCo who also did the detail design, the canopy came from The SEC Group in Oregon.
