Vancouver Ponds and Lakes Not Safe for Skating

January 5, 2004 (No. 1) - Residents in Vancouver are reminded that all ponds and lakes located within the Vancouver park system are not open for skating due to unsafe conditions. Ice thicknesses have not reached the crucial depth to allow skating at any locations such as Lost Lagoon, Beaver Lake and Trout Lake and ponds at Charleson Park, Granville Island, Devonian Harbour Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, Memorial Park South, Jericho Park, golf courses etc.

Cross country skiers should also keep off these unstable areas and dog owners are cautioned to keep their canine charges away from ice surfaces as they may break through.

In addition, pedestrians and cyclists should be careful on walkways and seawalls where daytime thawing and evening freezing can result in slick and slippery surfaces.
