Community Celebration for Lunar New Year Begins at Victory Square

January 15, 2004 (No. 3) - The Vancouver Chinatown Revitalization Committee and the Friends of Victory Square invite the public to join the Downtown Eastside community on January 24th in celebrating the "Year of the Monkey" with a special event that begins in Victory Square Park and ends at the Chinese Cultural Centre. Activities include monkey mask making, calligraphy, music and entertainment, including giant puppets, lion dancers, the BC Regiment Band, Sincere Lam Guzheng Ensemble, Qing Chang on the pipa and the Strathcona Dance Company.

The celebration begins in Victory Square and participants are then invited to join the procession to the Chinese Cultural Centre for refreshments and performances. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Friends of Victory Square and the Chinatown Revitalization Committee have joined with the Vancouver Park Board, Downtown Eastside Residents Association, Ray Cam Co-operative Centre, Carnegie Centre and Vancouver Moving Theatre to create this second annual community celebration for the Lunar New Year. The main Chinatown Parade will be held on Sunday, January 25th.
