"Looking Back"- Public Invited to Explore Vancouver's Past on Film

March 15, 2004 (No. 11) - The public is invited to a special screening presented by the Douglas Park Community Centre and CBC Television called "Looking Back." See how our city has grown - and how it has seen itself - from the 1900's onwards. Join CBC Television Archivist Colin Preston who will narrate the early Vancouver film footage.

Thursday, March 25th
7:30 pm
VGH's Nurse's Residence
2851 Heather Street (13th & Heather)

The event will feature:

The 1950's Interurban Line: a fascinating look at post-war Vancouver shot from the front end of an Interurban car as it travels the Oak Street line from downtown Cambie Street, along Broadway and up Oak to 54th Avenue.

"Vancouver Honeymoon" (1961) a decidedly retro, beaming propaganda piece on the delights of Vancouver--for honeymooners, industrialists, and others: "Come on in! Doors are open for business!"

"A City's Story-Vancouver" (1967) A thoughtful portrait of Vancouver at the end of the 1960s, its relationship to its natural surroundings and the frame of mind of its inhabitants. Narrated by Bill Reid.

"Douglas Park Recycles" (1990) Did you know that Douglas Park was one of the first communities to organize community recycling- even before the blue boxes got underway? This local news story features some local residents who may be familiar faces to you.

"Looking Back" is an exciting series of presentations that reflect on the City of Vancouver's history through old moving images and narration. These events are presented in cooperation with CBC Television and the Vancouver Park Board and will be offered at local community centres throughout the coming year.
