Vancouver Aquatic Centre Celebrates 30 Years!Take a Swim at the 1974 RateApril 28, 2004 (No. 24) - The Vancouver Aquatic Centre located at 1050 Beach Avenue will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on Monday, May 3rd with admission prices set at the 1974 rate. That translates to 65 cents for Adults and 30 cents for Children, Youth and Seniors. Light refreshments will also be on tap during the day and an opportunity to enter a draw for 30 days of fitness. At its completion 30 years ago, the Aquatic Centre was a state-of-the-art structure boasting a modified pyramidal shape set into the land slope affording the necessary interior volume for international diving and aquatic events. Its 50 metre length and movable bulkhead were excellent additions permitting all manner of lengths for swim meets. A children's warm, teach pool was the first public facility of its kind in 1974 along with the Park Board's premier fitness centre including sauna, whirlpool and exercise centre. The main pool has a capacity for nearly 900 people and contains about 2.7 million litres of water with permanent seating for just over 400 spectators. This facility's award winning design was by Duncan McNab and Partners with Thorson and Thorson Ltd., D.W. Thomson & Co. Ltd. and Roy Campbell Ltd. contributing engineering services. The Aquatic Centre was built by CANA Construction. -30- Contact: pbcomment@vancouver.ca, or call 604-257-8400.
