Monday May 10th Proclaimed Vancouver's "Move for Health Day" for Active Children and Youth

May 4, 2004 (No. 25) - On May 10th, take a swim, in-line skate, join an aerobics class, practice Tai-Chi, stroll the Seawall, or take your kids to the playground to celebrate World Health Day . The theme this year is "Move for Health," showcasing children and youth and the growing awareness that active living and regular physical exercise are essential to improving and maintaining good health throughout life

To mark this year's event there will be free admission for children and youth to all public swim sessions in Vancouver Park Board facilities on May 10th. As well, free access to Park Board operated fitness centres will be available to youth, under supervision for first timers, (13-18 years) from 3-6 pm that day. View our information sheet  for more information.

The Vancouver Park Board is committed to enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities and to providing a wide range of leisure services, fitness facilities, parks and green spaces. Your community centres, rinks, pools, sports fields and parks offer a wide range of inexpensive recreational opportunities that can be a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Establishing "World Health Day" was the first official act of the World Health Organization (WHO) when it was established in 1948. Its objective is to raise awareness and foster discussions regarding health issues worldwide and is observed annually in the 191 member countries of WHO. This year's theme of "Move for Health" aims to activate and motivate the 2/3 of the world's non-active population of children and youth.

Here are just some of the benefits of even a moderate amount of regular physical activity:

  •  Increased vitality and energy
  •  Stronger bones and muscles
  •  Improved immune system
  •  Delayed onset or prevention of chronic diseases
  •  Delayed decline in motor performance
  •  Weight control
  •  Reduced stress, anxiety, and depression
  •  Prolonged independence in old age
