Construction Starts on New Kitsilano Beach Project

Architect's rendering of the proposed design.
July 16, 2004 (No. 52) - Construction has started at Kitsilano Beach Park on the new restaurant and concession approved by the Vancouver Park Board in 2002. This $5.3 million project is a joint venture between the Park Board and The Restaurant at Kits Beach Inc. and along with the new food services will provide public washrooms and changing facilities, lifeguard station/tower and park maintenance area.

During construction, the beach and park will continue to be open for the public to enjoy, and provisions made for safe and easy access. The Park Board is providing a number of temporary facilities to continue service to park and beach users over the summer - trailers for lifeguards and change rooms, portable toilets, food and beverage carts and wayfinding signage to nearby amenities.

The new year-round two level building , comprising both a bistro-style concession on the ground floor and a licenced West Coast style restaurant on the top, will be 6500 square foot occupying about the same foot print as the original building constructed four decades ago. Many "green" building principles will be employed in the construction of the project such as utilizing ground source heating and cooling, solar shading and more.

It is anticipated that the project will be finished in time for the Summer 2005 season. More information about this project is available on our printable fact sheet
