Residents Are Invited to Help Name the New Park at 8th Avenue and Fraser Street

July 21, 2004 (No. 53) - It's Your Park! Help Us Name It. That is the theme of the Vancouver Park Board's initiative to enlist the public's assistance in naming the recently completed park located between 8th and 7th Avenues at Fraser Street that will serve the Mount Pleasant community.

When a new park is created, the Park Board uses the following guidelines to name it: a "constant" feature nearby or within the park-such as a bordering street or a distinctive natural or man-made landmark; an historical event or a person who has made a significant contribution to the Park Board and/or the City of Vancouver; a call for suggestions from the community for consideration by the Park Board.

Residents can share their naming ideas for this new park in the following ways:

Located in one of the city's most park deficient neighbourhoods, the 0.6 hectare (1.48 acres) parksite was amalgamated from private and public properties over the last decade. It includes a picnic area, playground, viewing knoll, lawns, pathways, a thriving community garden and a variety of trees and shrubs. The cost of the parkland over the last ten years totaled about $2 million and construction costs were $165,000. The community has taken an ongoing, active role in the vision and design for the park.
