August 18, 2004 (No. 61) - The Vancouver Park Board is ready to commence work on a new community pool at the Killarney Community Centre. Before construction of the new swimming pool can begin, the old pool building will have to be removed. The official start of the deconstruction of the old 1962 pool will begin Friday, August 20 at 9:00 AM. Park Board Commissioners and staff will be on site to answer questions about the project.

This is the first new public indoor aquatic facility built in Vancouver in twenty-five years. It is the first new pool to be built under the Park Board's Aquatic Facilities Renewal Program  [7.9Mb] and the first leisure pool in Vancouver. The project will feature a 25 metre six lane pool, leisure pool with beach entry and play features, a six metre high water slide, steam room, hot pool and a three metre diving platform. The project incorporates an ozone water treatment system which will reduce the use of chlorine and provide a more pleasant swimming experience. Pool ramps will allow easy access for people with limited mobility.

Most of the cost of the $10.7 million project, one of the largest ever undertaken by the Park Board, is funded through the Park Board's 2003-2005 Capital Plan. The Killarney Community Centre Society contributed $450,000 for the pool, as well as providing support during the development stage of the project.

The architects for the building are Hughes Condon Marler Architects, who also designed the recently completed addition to the West Vancouver Aquatic Centre. The contractor is Smith Bros. and Wilson (B.C.) Ltd., who worked on both the Richmond City Hall and the Commercial Drive Millennium SkyTrain station. Construction is targeted to be completed in the fall of 2005. The community centre and ice rink will continue to operate during construction.
