Stanley Park Seawall Remains Closed Due to Impact of Heavy Rain

(Third Beach to Lions Gate Bridge)

mapJanuary 21, 2005 (No. 5) - The Stanley Park Seawall will remain closed until further notice due to the danger of slides caused by the recent heavy rains. Several mud slides on the Seawall have been reported. Saturated embankments can continue to pose a threat even after heavy rains have subsided. Geotechnical engineers will continue to assess the slopes above the Seawall to determine when the popular pedestrian and cycling path is once again safe for use.

At Lost Lagoon the heavy rains have coincided with a seasonal tidal situation that has resulted in flooding of the Lagoon's perimeter path and the path on the north side of Ceperley Creek. Currently, only one of the two daily low tides results in a significant drop in the water levels allowing for the natural overflow into Coal Harbour. These paths are closed to pedestrians until further notice.

North Lagoon Drive may be closed again tomorrow if the forecasted heavy rains for this weekend cause the creek beside Cathedral Trail to break over its banks again.
