Stanley Park Seawall Remains Closed for Slide Removals

(Third Beach to Lions Gate Bridge)

January 26, 2005 (No. 6) - The Stanley Park Seawall will remain closed until further notice due to numerous slides caused by the recent heavy rains. Saturated embankments "slumped and slid" after unprecedented downpours. Geotechnical engineers will coordinate the removal of three slides and undertake cliff scaling and other work to ensure safe conditions on the seawall.

All going as planned, Park Board staff expect to re-open the popular Stanley Park seawall the weekend of February 5th.

The pre-emptive seawall closure was undertaken due to the inordinate amount of rain experienced in mid- January. The subsequent slides proved that this procedure for extreme weather conditions is valuable, in the best interest of public safety and will be the process for future severe weather forecasts.
