Invited to Celebratory Tea
Kerrisdale Community Centre to host 'Over 90 Club'
September 19, 2005 (No. 69) - The Senior Facility at Kerrisdale Community Centre, located at 5851 West Boulevard, is inviting its members over the age of 90 to a celebratory tea on Monday, September 26th starting at 2pm. Of the facility's 2,500 senior members, over 150 are 90 years or older with at least 6 individuals that have reached 100 already or will so in 2005.
The active lifestyle that our seniors are choosing in their golden years by participating in social and other recreational neighbourhood programs is a positive factor in maintaining health and longevity in our most treasured residents.
Profiles of several of the Kerrisdale Community Centre seniors is a resounding testament to living life to the full even over the age of ninety as exemplified below:
• Bess Wayslow is 93 and the driving force behind the successful sewing/knitting/craft group whose annual sales raised over $7,000 for the centre last year.
• Vi Smith at 90 has been a member at the Senior's Centre for over 15 years where she edits the monthly newsletter, plays head violin in the Elgar Strings group and is a past recipient of the Park Board Volunteer of the Year award. Her husband Pat continues to swim daily and play cards at the Centre twice a week.
• Daphne Goring will turn 98 in November and has been a volunteer Hawaiian Dance teacher for 15 years and still performs solos at events when needed.
• Lucy Constantini, a 25-year member at the Centre, reached the 100 year mark in May and is a regular, weekly participant at Kerrisdale's bingo program.
Vancouver's 23 community centres offer easy and affordable access to a host of opportunities and programs for seniors to stay connected and involved.
