Grand Opening Celebrations

Killarney Leisure Pool - Vancouver's First

March 31, 2006 (No. 8) - Tomorrow morning Mayor Sam Sullivan joins Park Board Chair, Heather Holden at the official Grand Opening celebrations for the new Killarney Leisure Pool. The $10.7 million complex is the first indoor public pool built in Vancouver in 25 years, the Park Board's first indoor leisure pool and first ozone-treated pool. The celebrations include music by the Killarney Secondary School Stage Band, aquatic exhibitions featuring members of the Pacific Dolphin Swim Club, the Vancouver Aquatic Centre Diving Club and the Killarney Community Centre Gators Swim Club. Refreshments and a beachball giveaway are also part of the festivities.

The 2,140 square metre aquatic complex was designed by Hughes Condon Marler Architects and built by Smith Bros. & Wilson (B.C.) Ltd. The facility has been designed to provide access, fun and fitness for the broadest range of users and includes wheelchair access points to both the leisure and lap pool. Natural light illuminates the complex through the approximately 600 m² (6,000 ft²) north facing glass wall, providing magnificent views of the North Shore mountains. Some of the pool's other features include:

  • Beach-style entry
  • Spray features
  • A "lazy river" play feature
  • Family change rooms
  • 25 metre lap pool
  • 15 metre warm lap pool
  • Giant water slide
This project is part of a $100 million Park Board infrastructure renewal program which over the next five years will see the construction of three rinks, three community centres and two pools.
