Park Board Chair Clarifies Vote on MotionApril 4, 2006 (No. 23) - Following the vote on a Motion at the Vancouver Park Board meeting last night, Chair Heather Holden reiterated the ways in which the Board recognizes the contributions made by women to the community, and reinforced the organization's focus on delivering parks and recreation services to all residents. The Motion brought forward at last night's meeting called for the Board to explore ways of recognizing women's achievements, to recognize International Women's Day, and to have staff report back on naming a park in recognition of women's contributions. Commissioner Holden said women are acknowledged, recognized and celebrated on a day-to-day basis at the Park Board through hiring practices, programming, events and services. The organization encourages participation by its partners and stakeholders to deliver a variety of neighbourhood-based celebrations and programs. As well, the Park Board works with City Council and staff on cultural, social and heritage celebrations throughout the year to observe and honour a diverse range of communities, including International Women's Day. Holden said, "The Motion was not supported by the Park Board since the Board wants to ensure efficient use of staff resources at a time when the City is looking at ways to maximize the value of every dollar. Furthermore, we wish to appropriately use the authority of this policy-making Board within the scope of our mandate. If residents wish to do research on significant achievements of women, we would welcome the information within the context of our established park naming guidelines and the pending City report on celebration of special days."- 30 - For information, contact: Joyce Courtney, Communications Manager, at 604-257-8699 or cell: 604-861-4375.
