Outdoor Ice Not Safe on Vancouver Parks

Residents Warned to Keep Dogs Off Park Ponds

November 29, 2006 (No. 87) - Outdoor ice skating on ponds and lakes located in Vancouver parks is not safe, despite current unseasonably cold conditions. The Park Board's Supervisor of Beaches & Outdoor Pools Glenn Schultz warns residents that these ponds represent a potential danger to people and their dogs. Popular locations include: Queen Elizabeth Park, Trout Lake at John Hendry Park, Jericho Beach Park, Vanier Park, Lost Lagoon and Beaver Lake in Stanley Park. Warning signs have been posted at these locations.

Snow cover on lakes and ponds can give a false sense of safety putting people at risk. Dog owners using off-leash areas in parks where ponds are located are cautioned to keep their canine charges on leash around these waterways to avoid having them venture onto thin ice.
