Update on Stanley Park Storm Clean-up

December 20, 2006 (No. 97) - Park Board crews continue their work in Stanley Park after extensive damage closed roads, facilities, the Seawall and forest trails after last Friday's storm. The following is a progress report as of 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 20th.

  • Progress continues to be made by Park Board forestry crews in their efforts to open the West side of the park. Crews working from the Prospect Point end of Park Drive have met up with crews working from the Beach Avenue end, but this area will remain closed to public access indefinitely as staff work to assess and remove remaining hazards.
  • Staff are beginning to place barricades on trails in the forested areas as they access them. The public is asked to respect barricades in the park and is again urged to stay out of the forested areas and off forest trails - these areas have not been assessed and cleared.
  • The public is reminded not to remove wood of any kind from Stanley Park. Removal of any natural materials from the park is a violation of the Parks Control Bylaw and will be enforced by police. The public is welcome to take free wood from the Park Board's wood lot located at Spanish Banks East.
  • A Stanley Park Tree Donation Fund has been activated for those wishing to donate to the park's reforestation. More information is available on our web site.

Bright Nights in Stanley Park is open, but visitors should check 604-257-8531 for daily updates. Park facilities on the east side of the park, including the Aquarium, have also reopened to the public. Vehicular access to the West side of the park, including the section of Park Drive west of Pipeline Road, and North Lagoon Drive is still closed indefinitely. The Seawall is accessible from the Georgia Street entrance, but cyclists and roller bladers must use Pipeline Road to detour from the park. The Beach Avenue entrance to the Seawall is open to pedestrian traffic as far as Third Beach. Bus service is available to the park as far as the roundabout at the Georgia Street entrance.
