Sheep Shearing Time and Special Celebrations at the Train and Children's Farmyard in Stanley Park!

May 14, 2007 (No. 33) - There's lots to celebrate this weekend at the Stanley Park Miniature Railway and Farmyard in Stanley Park. It's time for the annual spring sheep shearing. On Monday, May 21st, the 12 Cotswold and Jacobs sheep will be having their annual "haircut". Pookie the llama and Brandy the horse will also be getting a trim. Sheep shearer Lorei Tomsin is a well-known expert shearer who works throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Shearing will be conducted at regular intervals from 12 noon to 3 pm on Monday, May 21st.

Also celebrating a special milestone, Lesa, the Farmyard's Dexter cow, will be 20 years of age. Staff will be decorating her stall and a huge birthday cake will allow visitors to share in the celebrations, Monday May 21st from 12 noon to 3 pm.

It is also the 120th anniversary of Engine #374's arrival in Vancouver, the first transcontinental trip across Canada from Montreal. One of the engines that carries the Stanley Park train is an exact replica of Engine #374. In honour of the occasion the engine will be decorated for the long-weekend with flags, shields and boughs. Music will provide the fanfare to celebrate each train arrival during the day. Celebrations are also planned for the original Engine #374, which is housed at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, located at Pacific and Davie Streets.

A visit to the Children's Farmyard and the Miniature Railway is always a great family outing. Summer hours for the Children's Farmyard and the Train in Stanley Park begin on Saturday, May 19th - open daily from 11 am to 4 pm.
