City Limited for Cleanup;
Residents Reminded to "Pack Out What You Pack In"
July 28, 2007 - The City of Vancouver is reminding spectators who enjoy the HSBC Celebration of Light event tonight at English Bay, to pack out what you pack in. This reminder is more important than ever, as only about half as many staff will be available tonight for clean-up duty after the fireworks, as there were on Wednesday, July 25.
"We are asking that visitors who view the fireworks step up again tonight, as they did last Wednesday," states Susan Mundick, General Manager of the Vancouver Park Board. "We expect larger crowds and have fewer resources available to take care of the clean up."
As a result of a complaint by the union (CUPE 1004) to the Labour Relations Board, there are now limitations in place on the numbers of exempt staff the City and the Park Board can assign to do event clean up, both in the park, and in the streets, around the West End.
"If everyone who enjoys Canada's contribution to the Celebration of Light tonight plays their part in taking their litter off the parks and streets, it will be an incredible help to the few exempt staff we have on duty tonight," states Mundick.
