Special Open House
Proposed Observation Tower for Queen Elizabeth Park

November 6, 2007 (No. 56) - Public input is being sought on a proposal presented to the Park Board for a privately-developed and operated observation tower for Queen Elizabeth Park. Two open houses regarding the proposed viewing tower for the park are planned to solicit input from the community.

The concept for the tower which would be located adjacent to the Bloedel Floral Conservatory has been put forward by Henriquez Partners, on behalf of Observation Tower Inc. In the proposed design, three viewing decks (47, 52.5 and 56 metres from the ground) would be accessed by an elevator. From these, people would have unobstructed views in all directions.

Queen Elizabeth Park is the highest point in the city at 125 metres above sea level. Previously, the viewpoint offered unobstructed, 360 degree views, but over the years many of these views have become obscured by the park's maturing trees. The proposal also includes a gift shop and snack bar at the ground level. More details on the proposal can be found at vancouverparks.ca
