Nine O'Clock Gun Temporarily Out of Commission

February 4, 2008 (No. 5) - Stanley Park's iconic Nine O'Clock Gun was the target of vandalism over the weekend and will be out of commission while repairs are carried out. Vandals broke into the secured structure that houses the gun and both the wooden and metal components of the cannon were spray painted. Park Board staff estimate that it will take two to three weeks to assess any other damage to the historic gun, remove the paint and repair the structure. The gun, located near Brockton Point, is fired nightly.

The Nine O'Clock Gun, cast in England in 1816, was brought to Vancouver in 1894 and originally was fired to assist mariners in setting their ships' chronometers. The 12 pounder, muzzle loaded, naval cannon was restored in 1986 as a Canadian Centennial project.
