Stanley Park Restoration Project Wins BC Recreation and Parks Association's PERC Award for Innovation and Ingenuity

April 29, 2008 (No. 18) - Last week at the annual BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) Symposium held in Victoria, Park Board General Manager Susan Mundick, on behalf of the Vancouver Park Board, accepted the association's PERC Award for Innovation and Ingenuity. The award was given in recognition of the Stanley Park Restoration Project.

The award submission entitled "The Stanley Park Storm: From Crisis to Opportunity," was acknowledged for the vision and innovation the Park Board commissioners and staff brought to the daunting task of responding to the impacts of the devastating December 2006 windstorm that downed over 10,000 trees in the park.

Some of the highlights of the Stanley Park Restoration Project that were recognized by the PERC Award include:

  • Innovative partnerships with academia, industry, nonprofits, the media, the public and all levels of government
  • The creation of a range of opportunities for community involvement
  • The adaptation of new and existing technologies to the complex task of the Stanley Park clean up
  • Using the project as an opportunity to enhance the visibility and credibility of the organization
  • Developing a model of effective crisis management that can be adopted by other agencies and organizations

BCRPA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building and sustaining active, healthy lifestyles and communities in BC and is the lead resource agency for members and stakeholders of the parks, recreation, physical activity and culture industry.
