Official Ceremonies Mark the Reopening of NelsonJune 16, 2008 (No. 30) - The public is invited to the official opening of the newly redeveloped Nelson Park which serves as a green oasis in the heart of the city's busy West End Neighbourhood. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, cake, refreshments, arts and crafts and face painting for the kids. 10 to 11:30 am The $850,000 capital project for the 1.2 hectare park, developed in consultation with the community over a three year period, retains much of the character of the original park design. The plan includes new entryways and an elegant, welcoming pathway system of crushed granite and precast concrete edging that winds through newly planted grassy knolls. An inviting playground; a seating plaza defined by metal arbours and framed by colourful new garden beds and a restful water feature form the heart of the redesigned park. A new 2,000 square metre dog off-leash area enclosed by black, decorative fencing on the park's west side is a major attractor for neighbourhood dogs and their owners. Space for small community garden plots to be used by local residents and school students has also been included in the new design. As part of its commitment to sustainable practices, the Park Board retained, amended and reused the soil in the park. Granite removed from the old, dismantled park fieldhouse was used to as a base for the new water feature. The initial design concept was begun by Kim Perry Associates in 2005 and included a designing session with the community. In 2006 Durante and Kreuk was awarded the contract to complete the park redesign. Construction was done by Cedar Lands (B.C.) Ltd. -30- For more information, contact: Joyce Courtney, Manager of Communications, at 604-257-8699.
