Assignment Editors: Special Events in Vancouver Parks

July 2, 2008 (No. 19) - Vancouver Parks host a diverse range of cultural events and outdoor activities. Listed below are some upcoming special events facilitated by the Vancouver Park Board. Note to Stanley Park Visitors: To make an outing to Stanley Park on these busy summer days even more enjoyable, park visitors as asked to consider alternate modes of transportation: transit, cycling or walking. Or, park the car at one of the lots in the park and climb aboard the Stanley Park FREE Shuttle. The Shuttle stops at 15 popular sites around the park and runs from mid-morning to early evening. Outdoor Movie Spectacular Saturday, July 5th, 8 pm, Killarney Park Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, family and friends to enjoy a movie on a 44ft x 22ft screen in Killarney Park. A small concession will be available to purchase popcorn and drinks. Admission to this event is free. Call 604-718-8201 for more details.

Free Nature Walk in the Hastings Park Sanctuary Thursday, July 24, Evening walk, 7pm. Meet Naturalist Al Grass at the northeast corner of the Sanctuary for this two hour, free, guided walk. Rain or shine. Sponsored by the Hastings Park Conservancy. This invitation is not extended to dogs. Phone 604-255-9458.

77th ACURA Stanley Park Open Tennis Tourney July 12-27 at the Stanley Park tennis courts near the Fish House Restaurant presented by Tennis BC. Over 75 events for junior, adult, wheelchair and senior participants, novice to professional levels. Contact Tennis BC at 604-737-3087.

West Point Grey Sandcastle Competition Friday, July 18, 8 am Enjoy the spectacular beachside sands of Spanish Banks. The Sandcastle Competition draws over 1,000 competitors to enjoy a fun day at the beach. Prizes too!! Compete or watch the sand being moulded into fantastic designs. Vancouver Folk Music Festival July 18-20, Jericho Beach Park Offers the world's finest traditional and contemporary folk and roots music. Phone 604-602-9798.

Walk with the Dragon July 20 at 9 am, Stanley Park presented by SUCCESS. This community-based fundraising event includes the Stanley Park seawall walk and lots of activities, food and entertainment. Phone 604-408-7228.
