Help Us Name Your Parks!

July 18, 2008 (No. 43) - The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is asking residents to suggest names for two recently developed park sites in Marpole and South Cambie.

Ideas received will be considered by the new citizen-based Park Naming Committee.

Submissions should include the park name idea and a brief description about the suggested name. All submissions will also be eligible to win Flexipasses to Park Board fitness centres and pools, and passes to VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Park naming guidelines include a geographic feature such as a bordering street or a natural or man-made feature, or commemoration of a historical event or person important to the Park Board or the City of Vancouver.

The 4.75 hectare (11.75 acre) park in South Cambie is located at 37th Avenue and Oak Street across from VanDusen Botanical Garden and south of Eric Hamber Secondary School. It was redeveloped in 2007 and includes an off-leash dog area, a perimeter pathway and a soccer field built to accommodate two Ultimate fields. The park also features natural areas and a children's play area.

The 0.4 hectare (just under an acre) Marpole Park at 72nd Avenue at Osler Street is a new park that was designed to accommodate children at play and those residents who prefer to relax in a quite garden setting. Included in the park are two playgrounds, a climbing rock, landscaped lawns with pathways, timber entrance arbours, benches, a dry stream bed of rocks and flowing Mexican feather grass emptying into an ornamental garden with benches.

Visit the Park Board website at for a submission form and complete information. Forms are also available at Riley Park Community Centre, Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre and the Park Board administration office at 2099 Beach Avenue.

Deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm August 8, 2008. The Park Naming Committee will make their recommendations to the Park Board in the Fall.
