Public Asked to Help Keep Beaches Clean During HSBC Celebration of Light

July 21, 2008 (No. 44) - The Vancouver Park Board, City of Vancouver and the HSBC Celebration of Light  organizers are hoping to repeat the success of last year's fireworks event by enlisting once again the help of the fireworks spectators to help keep our beaches, parks and streets clean and safe. During last summer's event, the public was very responsive to the "pack it in, pack it out" message which meant that significantly less garbage was left on our beaches and parks. Whether bringing their own picnics, drinks or food items from home, or buying food on-site, the public is encouraged to take away any food containers, bottles or cans. This will greatly reduce the amount of garbage removal required by City and Park Board staff after each event.

In an anticipation of even bigger crowds this year, the City and Park Board will be increasing the number of garbage cans on-site around English Bay for litter disposal. In addition, increased recycling opportunities for bottles and cans will be available.
