Artists in Residence Work with Local CommunitiesJuly 25, 2008 (No. 45) - The Vancouver Park Board is pleased to announce that two artists have been chosen for the 2008 Artists in Residence program. Artist Corinna Hanson will be working with artist intern Michele Mateus and members of the Champlain Heights community to create unique glass tile mosaics. As well as working on a new outdoor bench, they will explore ideas such as designing shapes based on the theme of the natural environment that will then be covered in mosaic tile and installed in the outdoor patio area. Residents are invited to join in the project and explore the exciting medium of mosaic while helping create unique elements for the community. Coal Harbour Artist in Residence, Sharon Kallis, will be working with artist intern Alicia Horner and the local community to design and create a series of temporary sculptural artworks using leaves and other autumn garden ephemera. This is a chance for residents to meet their neighbours, learn about the plants of their local parks and discover the possibilities that exist in making art with natural materials. The Artist in Residence Program is based on principles of community
cultural development and is funded by the Vancouver Board of Parks and
Recreation in partnership with Community Centre Associations. Its purpose
is to support artists working with communities on issues of joint interest
or concern. -30- For more information, contact Danita Noyes, Community
