Public Asked Again to "Pack It In, Pack It Out"
after HSBC Celebration of Light
July 25, 2008 (No. 46) - Saturday night's fireworks
spectators are again being asked to reduce garbage left on beaches and
streets by using litter bins or packing their garbage home. The Park
Board is also asking that people refrain from digging holes in the sand.
Large holes create a difficult and even dangerous situation for the
staff operating the beach screening machine, which is used to remove
debris that may be buried.
The Park Board, City of Vancouver and the HSBC
Celebration of Light
organizers are hoping that fireworks spectators this weekend will rally
behind the cause to help keep our beaches and streets clean and safe.
The organizers would like to commend those who did their part after
Wednesday's event. Staff reported that, although not as impressive
as last year in terms of reduction in garbage left behind, many people
did use the litter bins or took their garbage home.
In an anticipation of even bigger crowds this year, the City and Park
Board have increased the number of garbage cans on site around English
Bay. In addition, increased recycling opportunities for bottles and
cans will be available.
