Dive into the Last Days of Summer! Pools, Parks, Beaches and Links Await You

August 25, 2008 (No. 49) - Though summer is beginning to wind down, you still have a chance to enjoy some our city's great outdoor amenities. Why not try something new? Before it's too late, keep that promise to yourself to drop in for a swim at one of our three heated, seaside pools. They are located at Kitsilano Beach Park, Second Beach in Stanley Park and New Brighton Park, just north of the PNE. Or, plan a trip to the beach with friends at one of our 10 lifeguarded bathing beaches, with a stop for lunch at one of our food concessions. There is still enough summer left in the sand and surf to indulge in the pleasures of the season!

Organize a round of golf at one our great courses. It's affordable and within easy reach-in terms of dollars, distance and bookings. Book online for one of our three full-length golf courses and just drop in at one of three pitch & putt courses located around the city.

Discover one of our new or "renewed" parks that opened this summer-each offers something special to discover:

  • Nelson Park which reopened in June is a green oasis located at the corner of Thurlow and Nelson Streets. It provides a welcome break from the hardscape of the nearby downtown area. Choose a grassy knoll for lounging with a good book, introduce your kids to the inviting new adventure playground or bring your dog to try out the new, fenced dog off-leash area.
  • Yaletown Park is new community plaza that opened in June at Mainland and Nelson Streets. The park, which serves as a neighbourhood gathering space, is paved with granite blocks and offers informal seating under a canopy of ornamental flowering trees-a welcoming place to meet friends over coffee or read the daily paper. The design is inspired by European plazas and reflects the eclectic mix of loading docks, heritage buildings and funky streetscapes of Yaletown.
  • Victoria Park's grand reopening celebrations are scheduled for September 6th, but the park is already "open for business". The centre of a vibrant neighbourhood, Victoria Park, on Victoria Drive at Kitchener Street, underwent a major facelift with upgrades to the children's play area, improvements to the existing bocce courts and more.

You will find additional information about pools, beaches, golf courses, parks and more on our website.
