Stay off the ice! Lakes and ponds not safe for skatingDecember 15, 2008 (No. 69) - As cold winter air settles in the area the Vancouver Park Board is reminding park visitors to use caution near lakes and ponds. Although the lakes and ponds look like ice-skating rinks the ice is thin and extremely dangerous for both people and pets who may venture out onto the ice. "The ice may appear thick but the reality is it is very dangerous," said Glenn Schultz, supervisor of beaches and outdoor pools. "Temperatures have not been cold for long enough to ensure the ice can support the weight of people or even dogs." Warning signs have been posted at popular sites cautioning residents of the danger to people and their dogs. Popular locations include Trout Lake at John Hendry Park, Lost Lagoon and Beaver Lake in Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, Jericho Beach Park, Vanier Park and Sutcliffe Park near the entrance to Granville Island. - 30 - For more information contact Barb Floden, Communications Coordinator, at 604-257-8438/ The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation maintains 220 parks and 40 major facilities throughout the City of Vancouver.
