Active NewsVACNet Launched!![]() Councillor Peter Ladner presents awards to Active Living Champions The City and the Vancouver Park Board officially kicked off the Vancouver Active Communities Network (VACNet) on January 16 with the enthusiastic support of local Active Living Champions and the Provincial Minister for ActNow BC. Mayor Sam Sullivan, Provincial Minister Gordon Hogg, Park Board Vice-Chair Korina Houghton and Honourary VACNet Chair Bob Lenarduzzi outlined their commitment to increase physical activity of Vancouverites 20% by 2010, a goal initiated through the Provincial Government's "ACTNow BC". Minister Hogg delivered a stirring keynote address on the importance of making physical fitness a daily health habit and connected its value to stronger neighbourhood and community ties. A select group of representative agencies and organizations were gathered to learn more about Vancouver Active Communities and will now comprise VACNet, spreading the active living gospel at the grassroots level. This new network of community sport and health proponents will serve as a steering committee to advise City Council while making recommendations on a number of strategies and programs for the Vancouver Active Communities initiative. Local active champions Bob Lenarduzzi, Colin Angus, Julie Angus and Tim Harvey received awards from the City for exemplifying active lifestyles. Mr. Lenarduzzi will serve as the honourary Chair for VACNet. For further information on Vancouver Active Communities and VACNet please contact Jim McKenzie at 604-257-8492. |
