City of Vancouver Public Art Walk

The Downtown Shoreline Public Art Walk is a wonderful route around the perimeter of Vancouver's downtown core.

The City of Vancouver Public Art Walk is a route that travels around the downtown peninsula. It is quite a long distance measuring close to 13 km (8.13 miles, or 25,740 steps) to complete the full loop. Plan to break the walk up into several sections as additional time is necessary to pause and appreciate the installations and monuments along the way.

Start the route by travelling west around Canada Place. There are 57 locations to make note of along the way. Coal Harbour is home to twelve sites, Stanley Park and the West End have four, and English Bay is home to nine. The North Shore of False Creek has twenty-three, and Chinatown, Gastown and the Downtown East Side combine to offer the final nine.

Each work is reflective of its geographical location, and surrounding community. Travelling through seven different neighbourhoods, the walk offers a unique glimpse into the City's social history and urban development.

The art installations often blend seamlessly into their sites. Few have detailed information plaques, granting viewers with the opportunity to develop unique interpretations, and interact with the public art in their own way.

Monuments of Vancouverites such as David Oppenheimer, and Gassy Jack Deighton honour distinctive individuals by marking their legacy of contribution to the City.

Stunning architectural landmarks such as the Marine Building, and important historic sites including, Lost Lagoon and Coopers Park round out the walking tour.

The Downtown Shoreline Public Art Walk self guided brochure gives viewers additional information. For details and descriptions of all works along the route, as well as site locations download the PDF map .
