2008 Artists in Residence

at Coal Harbour Community Centre.

The Project Outline:

Our local landscape can become an artist's palette. Have you ever stopped to pick up a leaf and remarked at its beauty?

Join Coal Harbour Art in Residence, Sharon Kallis in designing and creating a series of temporary sculptural artworks using the leaves and other autumn garden ephemera from our own backyard. Meet your neighbours, learn about the plantings that inhabit our local parks and discover the possibilities that exist in making art with natural materials.

Sharon Kallis – Artist Profile/Bio:

As a sculptor, Sharon Kallis works seasonally with materials the land produces. Humble repetitive tasks; gathering, sorting and identifying natural materials: leaves, petals, branches etc. is her urban dweller's way of getting to see and know the landscape. Sharon's desire is to leave as soft an environmental imprint as possible, while engaging with others through the practice of participatory art installations and shared art related experiences.

Working with natural, found or recycled material, Sharon engages communities to discover the wonder and diversity in both the natural and constructed world. Using hand skills including sewing, lashing and weaving, the works come together like a quilt, with everyone's contribution becoming a piece of the whole.

Sharon graduated from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1996 and began working with natural materials in 1999. Sharon's site specific work has been created and exhibited in Canada, Ireland and the United States. Her recent community engaged projects involved working with New York Harbor School on Governors Island N.Y., Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver and with the support of Artstarts at Cariboo Hill in Burnaby.

Artists' Potluck Garden Tea Party , Sundays, 3-5pm, August 24, September 7th - hosted by Sharon Kallis and Lori Weidenhammer

Alicia Horner - Intern Artist Bio

Alicia Horner is currently studying Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and is interested in the relationship between humans and their surrounding environment. Alicia appreciates the important role that public art plays in developing unity amongst people with different backgrounds and experiences.

Alicia's goal is to engage others in ways that are thoughtful and creative, using materials that are often found or recycled. Her interest in the environment and the importance of community is most visible in her involvement with the Emily Carr sustainable working group SWIG. At SWIG Alicia participates in various campus projects that develop student unity and foster awareness of the impact of humans on the environment.

Alicia started her studies at Langara College where she completed foundation year in fine arts and then went on to attend Douglas College where she studied biology, history and psychology. Alicia has exhibited her work at various galleries in Canada since 1995, including the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Her most recent work consists of a series of sculptural pieces constructed from found objects on Granville Island that deal with notions of sustainability, class and consumption and a drawing series inspired by microscopic soil samples taken from the same site.
