Artist Beverly Dobrinsky
Vocalist, composer, and teacher of voice and Kodaly musicianship, Beverly received her Bachelor of Music from UBC in 1986, and her Kodaly Musicianship teacher training from the University of Victoria in 1990. She directed the Hungry Ghosts, a contemporary chamber ensemble from 1983 to 1986, and Razom Sestre, a women's Balkan ensemble from 1990 to 1991. In 1991, inspired by the centenary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, she founded Zeellia, a Slavic soul sextet which specializes in Eastern European traditional music with a contemporary edge.
Along with composing and arranging music for all of these ensembles, she has produced two CDs with Zeellia, performing with them across Canada and in New York. She has also recorded soundtrack vocals for many Canadian independent films including, Being Caribou, Uncle Eddie's Guide To Art Appreciation, and Enemy Aliens, for which she also created the music. In addition to performing with and managing Zeellia, she currently directs three local choirs and teaches private voice and Kodaly musicianship classes. She has been a music educator for the last 20 years, teaching in various Montessori schools, the Vancouver Academy of Music, Vancouver Community College, and the GICEL Summer Camp on Mayne Island. She joined the staff of the Renfrew Community Performance Project in 2006 where she directs the choir and composed the music that was performed at the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival in 2006 and 2007. A native of Winnipeg, she has made her home in Vancouver for the past 30 years.
