Located on beautiful John Hendry Park (27.4 hectares), the area has an interesting history. This was the site of one of Vancouver's first lumbering operations in the late 1800s - the Hastings Sawmill. Its owner was John Hendry and the lake was the important water source for the mill. In 1926, Hendry's daughter, Mrs. Eric Hamber, donated the mill property to the Park Board for park purposes under the condition that it be named for her father. The original Trout Lake Community Centre, located near Victoria Drive just south of East 12th Avenue (earlier called Grandview Community Centre) was opened in 1963 receiving major renovations and expansion in 1977. All ages and ethnic groups are served here.

A wide range of programs are offered including the First Nations Pow Wow and an active seniors group. The popular East Vancouver Farmers' Market is hosted in the community centre's parking lot during the Summer and Fall seasons. Trout Lake is a favourite outdoor swimming facility and is lifeguarded from around Victoria Day to Labour Day. The magical Illuminaires-Lantern Festival takes on the lake in early summer.

Trout Lake Community Centre is jointly operated by the Grandview Community Association and the Vancouver Park Board.
