Vancouver Olympic / Paralympic Centre Opening

Come to the centre of it all


Be part of a fun-filled, family celebration at the opening of the official 2010 Winter Games curling venue.

Performances by bagpiper Sylvia DeTar, Children of Takaya drumming, Cirkids juggling and gymnastics, General Brock Elementary choir, Kin Fung Athletic Group Chinese lion dance, contemporary curling-inspired dance by stARTdance, interactive bhangra dance by South Asian Arts, dhol drumming by Dhol Nation Academy, Project SOULdiers hip hop dance and the Downtown East Side Samba Band.

Meet the Vancouver 2010 mascots and Olympic and Paralympic athletes. And take in activities and displays by Active Communities, BC Hydro Powersmart, BC Sports Hall of Fame, Chix on Stix stilt dancing, CTV live broadcast featuring Tamara Taggart and Vanessa Richards, Host City, Legacies Now SportFit, Phoenix Gymnastics, Vancouver Curling Club, Vancouver Park Board and Vancouver Public Library.

There will be opportunities to build an Inukshuk, colour a curling rock, try out curling on dry floor and on a computer and watch a curling demonstration in action!

Great prizes and giveaways throughout the evening. Free admission.

The Centre will be home to curling and wheelchair curling competition during the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and will convert to a stunning community facility featuring an aquatic centre, community centre, library, rink and curling club after the Games.

False Creek 2010 Winter Games Step Out Walk

Sunday, February 15, 2009 / 1-3 pm
Meet on the seawall on the southeast corner of False Creek, just south of Science World
Hosted by the Vancouver Park Board and the City of Vancouver

Take a special Active Communities Vancouver walk and explore the changing skyline around Southeast False Creek and the Olympic and Paralympic Village Vancouver. The site will be home to athletes during the 2010 Winter Games. After the Games the site will feature new parks, a community centre, housing and other amenities.

The scenic 3 km walk along False Creek's seawall will take you past other landmarks such as Science World, BC Place Stadium and over the Cambie Street Bridge.

Special guests, dignitaries and athletes will be participating. This event is free.

Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. A short detour around bridge stairs will be available for stroller and wheelchair participants.

Hosted by the Vancouver Park Board, the City of Vancouver, Spirit of BC and BC Hydro

Come out to your local rink for a free Spirit of BC Family Skate Day presented by BC Hydro in celebration of one-year countdown festivities. Six community rinks are each hosting two free public skates each. Skate rentals are available, but consider bringing your own to avoid line ups at these popular events. Bring a non-perishable food bank donation for your chance to win great prizes. Athlete and Vancouver 2010 mascot appearances at selected sessions!
