New Year's Resolution #1Get in the Swim!
![]() Swimming fun at one of our Community Centre pools. Just getting wet makes the swimmer feel good and all the stretching, kicking and steady activity gets the heart pumping at a constant level helping to condition your body's most important muscle. And swimming is especially good for women. Researchers have found that swimming can increase bone mass in older women as much as weight-bearing exercise. Moreover, a study in The Journal of the American Medical Association showed that younger women can strengthen their bones through exercise and calcium supplementation, even after the bones no longer are going through the lengthening process. And for all of us making resolutions to lose weight this winter through more physical activity, remember that the average swimmer burns 350-420 calories per hour depending on their speed. The Vancouver Park Board operates nine indoor swimming pools throughout the city with a wide variety of special programs for all ages from infants to seniors to those with disabilities. Contact your local Park Board pool today or find our Swimming Pools section on the Park Board website for more information. Get in the swim in 2004!
