Background

China Creek South Park is a medium-sized park (1.6 hectares or 4.0 acres) located in the eastern portion of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, near Broadway and Clark Drive.

The park currently includes:

  • a children’s playground (though it was removed in 2004 when a sewer construction project required its removal);
  • a half-court of basketball;
  • a skateboard facility;
  • Nanook daycare;
  • grassy areas; and
  • large trees, especially in the northwest and southeast portions of the park.
  • The park has a zigzag shape, because it was built along the corridor of China Creek.

The park is bounded by two busy arterial streets, with significant truck traffic along Clark Drive and significant bus traffic along Broadway. The park is also bounded by apartment buildings and houses on many sides. Tenth Avenue cuts through the centre of the park in an east-west direction, and is a designated bikeway.

Under the park run two major sewers, one for collecting rainwater, the other collecting sanitary sewage. A venting pipe exists in the park, in the area south of the skateboard facility.

The last major upgrade to the park occurred in the late 1970s.
