Provincial Government Presents Cheque for $2 Million for Stanley Park Restoration

April 11, 2007 (No. 25) - Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt presented a cheque for $2 million to Mayor Sam Sullivan and Vancouver Park Board Chair Ian Robertson today to assist in the restoration of Stanley Park. The funding from the provincial LocalMotion program will help to carry out the remedial work on the park's trails and the Seawall following the devastating wind storm that swept through the park last December.

Mayor Sam Sullivan said: "I am very pleased the Provincial Government has committed to help restore the jewel of Vancouver, Stanley Park. This funding will add to the support offered by the Federal Government, City of Vancouver and the thousands of individuals who have demonstrated how much the Park means to them and future generations."

"The $2 million could not have come at a more opportune time, with the release of our draft Restoration Plan yesterday," noted Chair Robertson. "This money, along with the funds committed by the other two levels of government and those from over 5,000 private and corporate donors, completes the financial framework of $9 million needed for the recovery of our beloved Stanley Park."

The Park Board's draft Restoration Plan for Stanley Park balances the science behind the recovery strategies and the broad social values that form the park's identity. The plan, which lays out 14 major activities vital to the park's recovery, will be presented to the Board for consideration at a Special Meeting on April 16th at 7 pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
