Polar Bear swim back for 91st edition on January 1December 22, 2010 (No. 64) – Kick start 2011 and wash away the 2010 cobwebs by taking a dip in English Bay on New Year’s Day. The 91st annual Polar Bear Swim takes place at 2:30pm on January 1. Brave (or foolish) swimmers have been starting the new year with a dip in the chilly waters of English Bay since 1920 and each year thousands converge on the beach to take a dip or watch those that do. Whether a first time Polar Bear swimmer or someone who’s carrying on a decades-long tradition, everyone is welcome. "For as long as most of us can remember the Polar Bear swim has been part of many people’s holiday to-do lists," said Park Board chair Aaron Jasper. "And if you are planning on joining us, bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank." Last year 1,876 swimmers enjoyed the balmy 9 degree Celsius water, the warmest temperature recorded. The record participation was in 2000 with 2,128 brave swimmers taking the plunge.
First organized by Peter Pantages, the Polar Bear Swim is now overseen by the Vancouver Park Board in cooperation with the Polar Bear Swim Committee. -30- Link: Polar Bear Swim photo album on Facebook General enquiries: 3-1-1 (within Vancouver) or 604-873-7000 (outside Vancouver) Media enquiries: Barb Floden, Communications Coordinator, at (t) 604-257-8438 or (c) 604-992-564 |
