Bloedel Conservatory unveils new orchid display
Bloedel Conservatory is blooming with colour thanks to a vibrant new orchid installation developed in partnership with the Vancouver Orchid Society. The display celebrates one of the largest and most diverse plant families—orchids.
Visitors to the Conservatory can now explore a rotating collection featuring a stunning display of orchids, including Cattleyas, Vandas, and Dendrobiums, displayed among Bloedel’s more than 500 tropical plants. The installation highlights the remarkable variety of orchids found across nearly every habitat on Earth. With more than 28,000 species and over 100,000 hybrids cultivated around the world, orchids represent roughly 10 per cent of all seed plant species.
Members of the Vancouver Orchid Society collaborated closely with Bloedel’s horticultural team to design a visually captivating display. The circular centrepiece was inspired by the moon, with cascading elements that evoke the flow of a river. The featured orchids will change throughout the year—ranging from delicate slipper orchids to long-petalled Bulbophyllum—ensuring each visit offers something new to discover.
“Our visitors have always been fascinated by orchids, and this new display allows us to build on that excitement and curiosity,” said Emily Schultz, Acting Garden Director. “The Vancouver Orchid Society brings incredible horticultural expertise and a shared passion to educate, inspire, and connect people with plants, and we look forward to our continued work with them.”
“The Vancouver Orchid Society was founded on a shared passion for orchids and a commitment to exchanging knowledge, whether among newcomers or veteran growers. Our partnership with Bloedel Conservatory allows us to share that with an even wider audience,” said Michael Mah, President of the Vancouver Orchid Society. “Together, we’re helping people discover the incredible diversity of the orchid family and inspiring greater appreciation, protection, and conservation of these amazing plants.”
