City Council approves continued investment in Chinatown revitalization

Today, Vancouver City Council reaffirmed its commitment to the revitalization of Chinatown with the approval of $387,000 to support implementation of the Uplifting Chinatown Action Plan (9 MB), funding initiatives focused on enhancing cleanliness, safety, community stewardship and neighbourhood vibrancy.

“These programs reflect our commitment to a thriving, resilient Chinatown,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “From supporting seniors to removing graffiti and providing on-the-ground stewardship, this funding supports the frontline teams helping keep Chinatown welcoming and vibrant for generations to come.”

Grant recipients

The City provided grants to four organizations delivering key programs aligned with the Uplifting Chinatown Action Plan (2023) and the Chinatown Cultural District Framework (2024). 

  • Chinatown BIA – Graffiti Removal and Abatement Enhancement ($150,000): Supports the expansion of private property graffiti removal, including large-scale alleyway cleanups and seasonal maintenance.
  • Chinatown BIA – SafeWalk Program ($50,000): Supports the SafeWalk program, which provides on‑request accompaniment to help residents, especially Chinese‑speaking seniors, travel safely through the neighbourhood and serves as ambassadors for visitors.  In 2026, the program will expand outreach and partnerships to support increased activity during the World Cup.
  • Chinese Community Policing Centre – Volunteer Graffiti Removal Program ($10,000): Supports additional volunteer shifts, supplies and cleanup events. This includes targeted efforts on World Cup match days to help maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
  • EMBERS – Chinatown Community Stewards Program ($177,000): Supports the continuation of seven-day-a-week stewardship services, including storefront support, cleanliness monitoring, wellness checks, and rapid response to business needs.
